abstract | A transparent composite substrate having excellent optical characteristics and a highly reliable display element substrate including the transparent composite substrate are provided. A transparent composite substrate 1 according to the present invention includes a composite layer 4 having a glass cloth (glass fabric) 2 and a resin material 3 impregnated in the glass cloth 2 and having an Abbe number of 45 or more. The gas barrier layer 5 is formed of a silicon compound that is expressed by SiOxNy and that satisfies the relationship of 0.3 <x / (x + y) ≦ 1.
