abstract | To obtain a composition having excellent water retention and strength in a paper coating composition containing a large amount of calcium carbonate as a pigment. (A) 20 to 80% by mass of a structural unit derived from an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, (B) 4 to 10% by mass of a structural unit derived from an unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and (C) A copolymer having a copolymerizable monomer-derived structural unit of 5 to 76% by mass (however, (A), (B), and (C) in total of 100% by mass) is contained in a transmission electron microscope. Characterized in that it contains a copolymer latex having a number average particle size of 30 to 80 nm and a viscosity at a solid content of 48% by mass of 50 to 400 mPa ยท s, as well as a pigment containing 60% by mass or more of calcium carbonate.
