Disclosed is an inhibitor of ROS that can function to alleviate the activity of ROS kinase activity in fusions and deletions involving the ROS gene. The present invention relates to the use of ROS kinase inhibitors to treat abnormal cell proliferation in mammals. In particular, the present invention provides a method for treating a mammal suffering from cancer mediated by at least one genetic alteration ROS. Specifically, the present invention provides a method of treating a mammal suffering from cancer mediated by at least one genetic alteration ROS by administration of crizotinib.
