titleOfInvention | Biomass hydrolysis |
abstract | High yield method for chemical hydrolysis of lignocellulose to monosaccharides. The process of the present invention can be further applied to related biomass polysaccharides such as cellulose, xylan and galactan, mannan, or arabinan. This method is used for hydrolysis of biomass polysaccharide substrates. This process is performed in an ionic liquid in which the cellulose is soluble, in the presence of an acid catalyst, at a sufficiently high temperature to initiate hydrolysis. After the start of hydrolysis, water is added to the reaction mixture at a rate adjusted to avoid precipitation and further avoid unwanted sugar dehydration products such as HMF. The hydrolysis product is useful as a feedstock for fermentation including fermentation processes for ethanol, butanol and other fuels. [Selection] Figure 2 |
