Synergistic effect of blending multiple additives in UHMWPE |
abstract |
An oxidation resistant crosslinked ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is described in which the oxidation resistance of the crosslinked UHMWPE is synergistically increased by at least two different additives in production. This allows the production of oxidation resistant crosslinked UHMWPE using low levels of additives and / or low levels of crosslinking radiation or chemicals. Low levels of additives and / or cross-linking result in cross-linked UHMWPE having the desired physical properties that are only possible in the presence of additive synergistic interactions. This cross-linked UHMWPE can be used in medical prostheses such as bearing components that have the desired physical properties such as wear and oxidation resistance that are only possible with the synergistic interaction of additives. . |
