A method for assessing the risk of cardiovascular disease in a subject by detecting the level of at least one metabolite in a sample from the subject is disclosed herein. Metabolite levels indicate the risk of cardiovascular disease in the subject. The metabolite can be an acylcarnitine, amino acid, ketone, free fatty acid or hydroxybutyrate. Cardiovascular disease can be a risk of cardiovascular events, the presence of coronary artery disease or the risk of developing coronary artery disease. |
