High delivery temperature isopipe material |
abstract |
An isopipe (13) for making glass or glass ceramic using a fusion process is disclosed. The isopipe is made from a silicon nitride refractory material that includes (a) less than 10% by weight of one or more sintering aids in an atmosphere having a pO 2 of less than 0.1. SiO produced by using a block, (b) machined in the shape of an isopipe, and (c) an oxygen partial pressure of 0.1 or higher and exhibiting substantially only a passive oxidation mechanism for a certain period of time. Exposed at a temperature sufficient to form a two layer (31). This SiO 2 layer (31) serves as a protective barrier against further oxidation of silicon nitride during use of the isopipe (13). The bending of the isopipe (13) during use is less than that of the isopipe made of zircon. |
