abstract | The apparatus and method are described for obtaining radiation interaction data from an object in order to allow a better determination (measurement) of the composition of the object. The radiation source and radiation detector system are utilized to collect both transmitted and scattered radiation, and the scattered radiation preferably includes radiation from at least one forward scattering mode. The detector system can detect and collect spectroscopically resolvable information about the incident radiation. Each intensity data set is decomposed over at least three energy bands within the spectral range of the source, and this data can then be numerically processed to allow a better determination (measurement) of the composition of the object. .
