abstract |
The present invention provides an integrated two-stage economic process for producing vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) from acetic acid in the gas phase. First, acetic acid is hydrogenated either in a single reactor zone or in a dual reactor zone where the intermediate hydrogenation product is either dehydrated and / or cracked to form ethylene. Is selectively hydrogenated over the fluorination catalyst composition to form ethylene. In the subsequent second stage, the ethylene thus formed is reacted with molecular oxygen and acetic acid on a suitable catalyst to form VAM.
