A method for synthesizing a polymer conjugate utilizing a water-soluble coupling agent is provided. Methods are provided for isolating polymer conjugates that use no organic solvents (eg, chlorinated solvents, etc.) or use the minimum amount necessary. Methods for preparing and isolating polymer conjugates comprising repeating units of formula (I) and formula (Ia) are described herein. The polymer conjugate can include an anticancer drug.
