abstract Various systems for generating nitric oxide are disclosed herein. According to one embodiment, the system includes a first gas source that provides nitrogen dioxide mixed in air or oxygen, and a second gas source that supplies compressed air and / or compressed oxygen. The system also includes a ventilator coupled to the first gas source and the second gas source, the ventilator being resistant to nitrogen dioxide. The ventilator controls the gas flow and allows adjustment of the nitrogen dioxide concentration in the gas flow. The system further includes one or more converters operably coupled to the ventilator, the converters converting nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide. The patient interface delivers nitric oxide to the patient and is operably coupled to the conversion device. The system can vary oxygen and nitric oxide levels independently. [Selection] Figure 1
