abstract The present invention provides a phototoxicity test method capable of effectively conducting a test substance's ability to develop phototoxicity. A phototoxicity test method comprising the following steps (1) to (4). (1) a first step of bringing a test substance into contact with human retinal pigment epithelial cells; (2) Human retinal pigment epithelial cells contacted with a test substance in the first step are cultured within 24 hours after the start of contact in the first step while irradiating artificial light including a wavelength distribution ranging from 340 nm to 380 nm. The second step, (3) A third step of collecting the human retinal pigment epithelial cells cultured in the second step and measuring the index of the cytotoxicity of the collected cultured cells or a correlation therewith, (4) Fourth step in which the presence or absence of the phototoxicity of the test substance is evaluated based on the measurement result in the third step, and the phototoxicity of the test substance is tested.
