abstract The present invention provides a method for producing a catalyst capable of stably improving the durability against potential cycle of platinum particles whose surface is modified with gold. A method for producing a catalyst including at least platinum particles made of platinum alloy or platinum, the step of coating a surface of the platinum particles with a copper layer, and the platinum particles coated with the copper layer being converted into gold ions. It includes at least a step of replacing copper in the copper layer with gold by contacting with an aqueous solution, and a step of heat-treating the surface of the platinum particles replaced with gold in a non-oxidizing gas atmosphere.
