The present invention provides a practically usable method capable of efficiently recovering a rare metal by utilizing a mechanochemical reaction. A rare metal oxide powder is obtained by a mechanochemical reaction of a rare metal oxide powder with a lanthanoid element powder in an atmospheric pressure atmosphere. As the lanthanoid element powder, cerium is preferable.
