abstract An object of the present invention is to improve the corrosion resistance and spall resistance of refractories used in industrial kilns, in particular, refractories used in ironmaking and steelmaking processes in the steel industry. A refractory raw material composition containing 0.1 to 5% by mass of lanthanum oxide and 0.5 to 25% by mass of a carbon raw material is molded into a clay obtained by adding a binder and kneading. In the carbon-containing refractory obtained by heat-treating the molded body, at least one of the following condition a and condition b is satisfied. Condition a: A binder that generates water vapor during heat treatment is used. Condition b: heat treatment is performed in an atmosphere containing water vapor and / or carbon dioxide gas.
