The present invention seeks to provide compositions and methods for tissue regeneration, specifically for treating skin injuries, such as wounds. In one aspect, the present invention relates to a wound treatment composition comprising living cells, such as fibroblasts, within a support matrix, such as fibrin, wherein the cells are wound wounds. Provided is a wound treatment composition having a therapeutic phenotype and wherein the composition is monolayer and has been incubated for up to about 8 days to allow the generation of the wound treatment phenotype. The compositions and methods of the present invention are particularly useful in assisting in the healing process of wound healing, specifically chronic open wounds that are slow or resistant to healing.
