abstract In a photoacoustic imaging apparatus using a semiconductor laser as a pulsed light source for irradiating pulsed light, noise is prevented from occurring in an image signal. A photoacoustic imaging apparatus in which a semiconductor laser is used as a pulsed light source for irradiating a subject with pulsed light, and in particular, a low current less than its oscillation threshold is constantly supplied to the semiconductor laser when the apparatus is in operation. In the photoacoustic imaging apparatus 200 having the configuration, the period during which the current less than the oscillation threshold is supplied to the semiconductor laser 102 between the semiconductor laser 102 and the subject is the time for cutting off the light from the semiconductor laser 102.
