abstract The present invention provides an easy and simple production method capable of efficiently and highly selectively obtaining a trans-trans isomer of an asymmetric fluorobutadiene compound useful as a functional material such as a liquid crystal material. Provided are a novel asymmetric fluorobutadiene compound, a composition containing the compound, and a liquid crystal electro-optical element containing the composition. A R 1 - (A 1 -Y 1 ) l - (A 2 -Y 2) m -A 3 -CF = CF-CF = CF-A 4 - (Y 3 -A 5) n - (Y 4 -A 6) method for producing asymmetric fluoro butadiene compound represented by o -R 2 (1). In the formula, R 1 , R 2 : substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, halogen atom, or cyano group; A 1 , A 2 , A 3 , A 4 , A 5 and A 6 : Independently of each other, substituted or unsubstituted trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group, 1,4-cyclohexenylene group or 1,4-phenylene group; Y 1 , Y 2 , Y 3 and Y 4 : Independent of each other, a single bond, ā€”Oā€”, ā€”Sā€”, or a substituted or unsubstituted divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; l, m, n and o: independent of each other 0 or 1 Te; wherein "R 1 - (a 1 -Y 1 ) l - (a 2 -Y 2) m -A 3 - " and "-A 4 - (Y 3 -A 5 ) n - (Y 4 -A 6) o -R 2 "is not the same structure.
