The present invention provides a method for producing a supported noble metal based alloy catalyst having a high degree of alloying and a small crystallite size. The method is based on the use of a polyol solvent as the reaction medium and includes a two-step reduction process in the presence of a support material. In the first step, the first metal (M1 = transition metal; eg, Co, Cr, Ru) is activated by raising the reaction temperature to 80 ° C. to 160 ° C. In the second step, a second metal (M2 = noble metal; eg, Pt, Pd, Au and mixtures thereof) is added and the slurry is brought to the boiling point of the polyol solvent within the range of 160 ° C. to 300 ° C. Heated. This two-step process results in uniform reduction, resulting in a noble metal based catalyst having a high degree of alloying and a small crystallite size of less than 3 nm. The lattice constant is lowered due to the high degree of alloying. [Selection figure] None |
