abstract |
A method of reducing catalyst elution at the cathode of a membrane electrode assembly fuel cell is provided. A method of reducing catalyst elution at a cathode of a membrane electrode assembly fuel cell of the present invention includes (a) an anode, a cathode, and a polymer electrolyte membrane interposed between the anode and the cathode. Preparing a membrane electrode assembly; (b) assembling a fuel cell using the membrane electrode assembly; (c) applying a fluid containing an oxidizing agent to the cathode of the membrane electrode assembly; d) applying a fluid containing fuel to the anode of the membrane electrode assembly; and (e) supplying a sufficient amount of reducing agent to the cathode to maintain the average open circuit voltage of the cathode below about 0.98V.
