titleOfInvention Aortic valve prosthesis
abstract A valve for implantation in a patient's body is provided. The present embodiment provides a valve, such as an aortic valve, that is implanted in a patient's body. The valve has a cylindrical proximal region and a generally rectangular shaped distal region with opposing flat surfaces separated from each other by a relatively narrow flat side. A tapered region is provided between the proximal region and the distal region, the tapered region having two opposing flat surfaces, the two opposing flat surfaces The face has transitioned to the opposing flat faces of the distal region. The opposed flat surfaces of the tapered region are angled with respect to the proximal and distal regions. The opposing flat surfaces provided at the distal end of the valve allow blood flow therethrough during forward flow and generally during reverse flow. Blocks blood flow through the valve adjacent to each other. Optionally, at least one reinforcing member is coupled to the valve to prevent the valve from escaping during reverse flow.
