Provided is a treatment useful for regulating blood pressure and blood flow in a subject by administration of nitrite. It has been found that administration of nitrite ions to a subject results in decreased blood pressure and increased blood flow to the tissue. This effect is particularly beneficial, for example, for tissues in low oxygen tension regions. A pharmaceutically acceptable sub-group for treating, preventing, or ameliorating a condition selected from: a treatment useful for regulating blood pressure and blood flow in a subject, for example, by administration of nitrite Methods of administering nitrate to a subject: (a) ischemia-reperfusion injury (eg liver or heart or brain ischemia-reperfusion injury), (b) pulmonary hypertension (eg neonatal pulmonary hypertension) Or (c) cerebral artery spasm.
