abstract The present invention provides a means for controlling starch metabolism of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and improving the productivity of starch by nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. A method for producing starch comprising the step of culturing nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in which the function of the protein according to any one of the following (1) to (3) is suppressed to cause the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria to produce starch. Methods are provided: (1) a protein consisting of a specific amino acid sequence; (2) consisting of an amino acid sequence in which one or more amino acids are substituted, deleted, added or inserted in said amino acid sequence to control starch degradation A protein that functions as a transcription factor; (3) encoded by a polynucleotide comprising a base sequence in which one or more bases are substituted, deleted, added or inserted in a polynucleotide comprising a base sequence encoding the amino acid sequence; A protein that functions as a transcriptional regulator that controls starch degradation.
