abstract There is provided a method for producing hydrogen from a hydrocarbon compound, particularly biomass, which does not require high temperatures, complicated processes, large-scale equipment, and does not generate carbon monoxide as a byproduct. SOLUTION: (a) a step of generating hydrogen by a reaction between a sulfur compound existing in an alkaline aqueous solution and water; and (b) a sulfur compound oxidized in the step (a) containing oxygen. A method for producing hydrogen from a hydrocarbon compound, comprising the step of reducing with a good hydrocarbon compound. [Selection figure] None
