Layer 2, a front upper catalyst layer 3 covering the upstream side of the gas flow direction on the surface of the lower catalyst layer 2, and a surface of the lower catalyst layer 2 downstream of the front stage upper catalyst layer 3 in the gas flow direction An exhaust gas purifying catalyst comprising a rear upper catalyst layer 4 covering the side, wherein the lower catalyst layer 2 carries at least one of Pd and Pt, and the rear upper catalyst layer 4 carries Rh.
