A method for preparing microparticles comprising a bioactive agent and a polymer and expressed as a volume average particle size (VMD) having an average particle size of 10-500 μm is provided, wherein the bioactive agent is substantially insoluble in the polymer Is a. A bioactive substance or precursor thereof, a polymer or a mixture of precursors thereof and processing aids is contacted with a supercritical fluid, allowing the polymer to expand at the temperature and pressure conditions necessary to maintain the fluid in a supercritical state. B. Allowing the supercritical fluid to permeate and liquefy the polymer while maintaining the temperature and pressure conditions such that the supercritical fluid is maintained in the supercritical state; c.
