The present invention represents the use of a fluidized bed reactor in the carbonation of solid, inorganic and alkaline particulate materials containing alkaline metal salts. The present invention also represents a method for treating cement kiln dust (CKD) containing an alkaline metal salt. The treatment method comprises two steps: (a) a hydration step; and (b) a carbonation step, which is carried out in a fluidized bed reactor. In a preferred aspect of the invention, the treated CKD is used as an aggregate in sulfur polymer concrete (SPC). Accordingly, the present invention also provides a method for producing SPC comprising heating and mixing the treated CKD, elemental sulfur and modified sulfur of the present invention to produce a mixture. The SPC can be used as a barrier to limit the permeation of a material, such as a containment structure for storing materials such as hazardous waste. [Selection figure] None |
