abstract Metallic silicon nitride and metallic silicon oxynitride submicron powders are synthesized by solid phase reaction using nanoscale particles of one or more precursor materials. For example, silicon nitride nanoscale powders are useful precursor powders for the synthesis of metal silicon nitride and metal silicon oxynitride submicron powders. Through the use of nanoscale precursor materials for submicron phosphor powder synthesis, the product phosphor can have a very high internal quantum efficiency. The phosphor powder may include a suitable dopant such as a rare earth metal element.
