The present invention relates to novel polypeptides having enzymatic activity (known as glyoxalase III activity) that converts methylglyoxal to lactic acid in a single step, polynucleotides having nucleotide sequences encoding such polypeptides, and the like Regarding use. The present invention relates to the modulation of glyoxalase III activity in microorganisms by altering the expression level of polynucleotides encoding for such polypeptides. The present invention also relates to the production of general purpose chemicals, particularly 1,2-propanediol, acetol, and lactic acid, by fermenting microorganisms with modulated glyoxalase III activity. |
