titleOfInvention | A method for the conversion of plant materials into fuels and chemicals by the continuous action of two microorganisms |
abstract | Disclosed are methods for converting complex plant polysaccharides, including cellulosic materials, into fuels and other chemicals. In a preferred embodiment, the method includes continuous hydrolysis of plant polysaccharides by two or more microorganisms. In a further preferred embodiment, the method comprises converting a plant polysaccharide by one organism to a shorter chain polysaccharide or other compound, which is then used as a substrate by another organism as desired. To produce the compound In other preferred embodiments, the method includes continuous hydrolysis of plant polysaccharides by cellulolytic aerobic microorganisms and fermentation of the hydrolyzate by anaerobic microorganisms. |
