abstract |
A surgical instrument for creating a pneumostoma in the patient's lungs through the chest wall and techniques for using the instrument are provided. Lung opening devices and techniques may be used to create a pneumostoma, which causes gas to escape from the lungs through the chest wall, thereby treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The lung opening device includes a flexible shaft having a dilatation device at the distal end for transposing and engaging the lung tissue. A mandrel is provided to facilitate the introduction of the lung forming device into the lung. A flange attached to the shaft pulls the pneumoplasty device and lungs toward the chest wall and secures them in place while the pneumostoma tube heals. The instrument is designed to be secured to the patient's chest in a low profile configuration during the post-operative period. |
