titleOfInvention Fluid passage opening device and method
abstract An apparatus and method for assisting drainage of aqueous humor out of the eye is provided. According to some embodiments, an implant sized to engage within Schlemm's canal is provided. The implant has a plurality of penetrating members, the penetrating member having a non-expanded position where the penetrating member is positioned generally proximate to the longitudinal axis of the implant and an expanded position where the penetrating member is expanded outward. In use, the implant is advanced at least a substantial portion within Schlemm's canal with the penetrating member in the first unexpanded position. After the implant is placed in the Schlemm's canal, the penetrating member penetrates the Schlemm's canal wall when the penetrating member is moved from the first unexpanded position to the second expanded position. In this way, a fluid passage is formed in the Schlemm's canal wall. The implant can also serve to hold Schlemm's canal open. In addition, a delivery device for implanting the implant in Schlemm's canal is also provided.
