Excessive inflammatory reactions can cause a variety of diseases, including sepsis. Extracellular histones released in response to inflammatory challenges are shown herein to be mediators contributing to endothelial dysfunction, organ failure, and death during sepsis. As such, extracellular histones can be targeted not only pharmacologically by inhibitors, but can also be used as biomarkers for the prognosis of sepsis and other diseases. |
