A novel whitening agent is provided. A whitening agent containing rice red koji has a tyrosinase activity inhibitory action and a melanin production inhibitory action. Therefore, cosmetics and foods exhibiting an excellent whitening effect can be obtained by including this whitening agent in cosmetics and foods.
