Opaque coatings, paints and plastics have high hiding efficiency. Opacifying particles comprising pigment particles having an average particle diameter of 0.15 microns to 1.0 microns and a refractive index of at least 1.8, wherein the pigment particles are at least partially encapsulated in a polymer shell. The polymer shell has a calculated thickness of 35 nm to 200 nm, the polymer shell including at least a first polymer phase and a second polymer phase, wherein the first polymer is substantially a pigment An opacifying particle in contact with the surface of the particle, providing a calculated shell thickness of at least 25 mm, and wherein the first polymer has a refractive index that is at least 0.03 units lower than the refractive index of the second polymer.
