abstract | Provided is a display element having a good color tone from gray to black and having a high reflectance (contrast), and further a multicolor display element capable of developing any color by simple control. A plurality of display electrodes 13a to 13c are provided separately between a transparent substrate 11 and a counter electrode 15, and the plurality of display electrodes are provided with electrochromic layers 14a to 14c that emit different colors. The display element 10 includes an electrolyte, a metal salt compound, and a white scattering material between the transparent substrate and the counter electrode, and performs black display and white display by precipitation and dissolution of the metal salt compound.
