abstract |
An improved photosensitizer formulation for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). A pharmaceutical liposome formulation for photodynamic therapy comprising a liposome bilayer consisting essentially of phospholipids and a therapeutically effective amount of a non-polar photosensitizer. A non-polar photosensitizer is incorporated into the liposome membrane, thereby transporting non-polar and polar substances using the same vesicle. The structure and size of the liposome composition with the nonpolar photosensitizer formulated during lyophilization is preserved by adding a monosaccharide or polyalcohol as a cryoprotectant.
