The present invention provides an epoxy resin produced using epihalohydrin, which is a high-purity epoxy resin having a significantly reduced total halogen content. An epoxy resin obtained by reaction of an active hydrogen compound and epihalohydrin and having a total halogen content of 80 ppm by weight or less. An epoxy resin obtained by a reaction between an active hydrogen compound and epihalohydrin is purified by a sublimation method, a distillation method, a crystallization method, or an alkali washing method. A highly reliable cured epoxy resin material having no problem of halogen elution, which is useful as an electric or electronic material such as various insulating materials or laminates, can be provided.
