abstract | An object of the present invention is to provide a process for producing 3-methyltetrahydrofuran that is inexpensive and can be industrially implemented. SOLUTION: A step (1) using γ-butyrolactone (GBL) as a raw material to obtain α-methyl-γ-butyrolactone (α-Me-GBL) by methylating α-position of GBL; and α-Me-GBL A process for producing 3-methyltetrahydrofuran comprising the step (2) of obtaining 3-methyltetrahydrofuran. Further, in the step (2), α-Me-GBL is hydrogenated to produce 2-methyl-1,4-butanediol (2-MeBD), and the step (2A).
