A press molding process for producing a sheet glass material having a main surface roughness of 0.01 μm or less and having a target flatness as a glass substrate for a magnetic disk, and at least the plate A chemical strengthening step for producing a glass substrate in which a compressive stress layer is formed on the main surface of the glass material, and a polishing pad is pressed against the main surface of the glass substrate, and an abrasive is included between the glass substrate and the polishing pad. A main surface polishing step of polishing the main surface of the glass substrate by relatively moving the glass substrate and the polishing pad while supplying the polishing liquid. Further, the plate thickness of the plate-shaped glass material produced in the press molding step is increased by the amount of polishing by the main surface polishing step with respect to the target plate thickness as the magnetic disk glass substrate.
