A polyacrylonitrile-based copolymer containing 95 mol% to 99 mol% of acrylonitrile units and 1 mol% to 5 mol% of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate units. A polyacrylonitrile-based precursor fiber for carbon fiber obtained by spinning a spinning solution obtained by dissolving the polyacrylonitrile-based copolymer. A method for producing carbon fiber, comprising a step of flameproofing the polyacrylonitrile-based precursor fiber for carbon fiber at 250 to 300 ° C. in an oxidizing atmosphere.
