abstract | An alkenyl aromatic foam with good surface quality, high thermal insulation properties and low density contains less than 20 weight percent covalently bonded halogen using extrusion process, polydispersity less than 2.5 and Celsius 0 having a water solubility of greater than 0.09 moles per kilogram and less than or equal to 2.2 moles per kilogram at 130 degrees and 101 kilopascals and containing 0.4 moles per kilogram or more of a chlorine-free fluorinated blowing agent An alkenyl aromatic polymer composition containing from 8 to 2 moles per kilogram of blowing agent, and water at a concentration of at least 0.22 moles per kilogram, where kilograms per mole is relative to kilograms of alkenyl aromatic polymer. It is produced by expanding the foamable polymer composition. The density of the resulting foam is less than 64 kilograms per cubic meter and the thermal conductivity after 180 days is less than 32 milliwatts per meter Kelvin. |
