abstract A polyaxial bone screw assembly includes a threaded shank body member having an internal drive and an upper portion, optionally with laterally extending orientation ribs or fins. The bone screw assembly also includes a lockable receiver coupling member, an open retaining ring member having a slit or gap, and a compression insertion member. The inset cone or cylindrical surface at the top of the shank frictionally engages the similarly shaped inner surface of the retaining ring. The receptacle introduces the shank top and the compressed retaining ring upward into the receptacle cavity, but once the inner surface of the ring engages the conical surface of the shank top, the retaining ring passes through A restricted lower opening is provided so that it does not fall off the part.
