abstract |
In one embodiment consistent with the present invention, a method of treating a mammalian meibomian gland (10) comprises heat adjusted to a temperature sufficient to dissolve an obstruction in the meibomian gland in an eyelid containing the meibomian gland (104). To clear the gland by bringing the occlusion into a fluidized or (dissolved) suspension and maintaining heat for a period of time sufficient to dissolve the occlusion. The gland can then be mechanically treated to exude fluid from the gland (108), and the procedure is performed during or after the period while the occlusion is still flowing or suspended. The Pharmacological treatment of the gland by subsequent use of a local (local or systemic) drug (112) can then be used to help maintain proper flow of lipids from the gland.
