abstract | Biodegradable polymers and environmentally compatible non-VOC methyl formate are used as blowing agents to obtain expanded and extruded biodegradable polymer foams. The blowing agent may be a blowing agent blend further comprising at least one co-blowing agent, preferably an environmentally compatible species (eg, non-SOC), wherein the co-blowing agent is a physical co-blowing agent (eg, an inorganic agent, Hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons with polar functional groups, water, or any combination thereof) or chemical co-blowing agents, or combinations thereof. The blowing agent blend may be any combination of methyl formate and one or more co-blowing agents. The polymer foam may comprise a biodegradable polymer or a blend of it with other biodegradable polymers or conventional polymers (non-biodegradable polymers). The methyl formate-based foaming agent blend provides a stable foam for a variety of applications including containers and packaging systems, as well as thermal insulation and protective cushioning materials. A method for producing such a foam is also provided. |
