A modified sol-gel method for producing highly metallic siliceous materials such as colloidal silica or aluminosilicate particles is disclosed. First, the selected metal salt is added to a silicic acid solution or a silicic acid solution containing an aluminum salt. Aluminum is added to alter the metal-support interaction so as to form Al-O-Si bonds within the silica substrate. In addition to aluminum, other metals that form M-O-Si (M = Ti, B, etc.) bonds that are not reduced when treated with a reducing agent can be added. Once the metal, silicic acid and / or aluminum salt is produced, it undergoes colloidal growth upon addition to the basic heel. Immediately after colloidal synthesis, the metal salt containing the colloidal particles is left to maximize colloidal stability and is reduced with hydrazine to produce zerovalent metal-containing colloidal particles. Keeping the particles colloidal prior to use can be an effective way to form a catalyst material when it is easily spray dried or mixed with other materials for extruded catalyst particles.
