The present invention relates to the preparation of a carbon-treated composite oxide with a very low water content and its use as a cathode material. The carbon-treated composite oxide is composed of particles of a compound corresponding to the chemical formula AMXO 4 having a olivine structure and at least a part of the surface having a carbon adhesion layer by pyrolysis. In the chemical formula AMXO 4 , A is Li alone, or a part thereof is replaced with a maximum of 10% Na or K, and M is Fe (II) alone or part thereof is maximum. Replaced with one or more other metals selected from 50% Mn, Ni and Co, and / or some of them up to 10% other than one or more Mn, Ni and Co XO 4 may be replaced with a metal of equivalent or different valence and / or partially replaced with a maximum of 5% Fe (III), and XO 4 may be PO 4 alone or one of them.
