abstract The present invention provides formulations and methods of use thereof for rapidly assessing the in vivo activity of morphogens and / or their analogs. Disclosed is a method for assessing the potency and pharmacokinetics of morphogenic proteins and analogs capable of inducing functional tissue morphogenesis at a site of local defect at least 6 hours after tissue injury. The method comprises: (a) creating a local permissive defect site in a non-human mammal; (b) at least 6 hours after creating the local permissive defect site, Systemically administering to a non-human mammal, and (c) measuring the ability of the candidate morphogenic protein to induce new tissue formation that matches the surrounding tissue at the defect site.
