Disclosed is a modified metal complex which exhibits excellent catalyst life when used in an electrode catalyst for a fuel cell. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A mixture comprising (1) a metal complex and (2) a polycyclic organic compound having a skeleton having two or more heteroatoms in the same ring other than a purine base is reduced in mass before and after treatment. A modified metal complex obtained by modification treatment until the rate is 1 to 95% by mass; (1) a skeleton having two or more heteroatoms in the same ring other than the metal complex and (2) purine base A modified metal complex obtained by modifying a mixture containing a polycyclic organic compound and (3) a carbon material until the mass reduction rate before and after the treatment is 1 to 90% by mass.
