An alicyclic dicarboxylic acid diester suitable for lubricating oil for refrigerators and a method for producing the same are provided. A diester having an alicyclic or aromatic adjacent dicarboxylic acid diester having the following physical properties 1) to 9), and a lubricating oil for a refrigerator containing the diester. 1) Total acid value: 0.05 mgKOH / g or less 2) Sulfated ash content: 10 ppm or less 3) Sulfur content: 20 ppm or less 4) Phosphorus content: 20 ppm or less 5) Peroxide value: 1.0 meq / kg or less 6) Carbonyl value: 10 or less 7) Volume resistivity: 1 × 10 11 Ω · cm or more 8) Hydroxyl value: 3 mgKOH / g or less 9) Water content: 100 ppm or less.
